Strategies to Use Everyday Law Case Studies Effectively

You can use the following strategies to solve legal case studies.

Particulars

Details

Connect Principles with Real Life

  • Relate every legal principle (like negligence, contract, or constitutional rights) to a simple, everyday example.
  • Example: Breach of contract → "ordering food online but restaurant cancels without reason."

Break Down the Case into Four Parts

  • Facts: What actually happened?
  • Issue: What is the legal question?
  • Principle: Which law or legal doctrine applies?
  • Application/Conclusion: How does the principle solve the issue?

Spot the Core Legal Concept

  • Focus on one main legal issue, not side details.
  • Example: If someone slips in a mall, the key concept is duty of care, not whether the person was in a hurry.

Use Case Studies for Multiple Perspectives

  • Practice both sides: plaintiff vs. defendant.
  • Example: In a medical negligence case, argue from both doctor’s and patient’s side to sharpen reasoning.

Simplify Legal Jargon

  • Translate legal terms into everyday language to remember them better.
  • Example: “Mens rea” → criminal intent; “Force majeure” → unavoidable event like flood or pandemic.

Practice with Variations

  • Take one case study and tweak facts slightly to see if the outcome changes.
  • Example: Borrowing a friend’s bike with/without permission → Theft vs. Lawful possession.

Link with Current Affairs

  • Connect everyday case studies with recent judgments or legal news.
  • Example: OTT platform censorship → freedom of speech vs. reasonable restrictions.
